I use Adobe Lightroom too !

on May 28, 2011

I had an interesting question on the PhotoshopIsland Facebook fan page (you don’t “Like “ me on Facebook? You can do that right here). I wanted to share that Q & A here in the Island Journal.

The question, “I was curious if you used Photoshop Lightroom much?”

I do use Lightroom. I'm a Photoshop expert so sometimes Lightroom feels a little like my hands are tied BUT… if you shoot RAW format (I do and love it) the image adjustment controls seem easier and more robust than the camera RAW in Photoshop. Plus I like using Lightroom to keep my images organized, for batch exporting and sending to the web etc.

So my approach is to store images in Lightroom and use it for basic camera RAW type image edits. The basic controls I use the most are: Exposure, Recovery, Fill Light, Brightness, Contrast, Clarity and Vibrance. Lightroom also has some powerful noise control options. Once I’m done tweaking I move into Photoshop for the heavy lifting or creativity when the situation demands it.

Many of the controls in Lightroom work the same as Photoshop. I’ve noticed that I’m using more Layer Adjustments in Photoshop than I used to. I think this is because I liked what those adjustments were doing in Lightroom.

I’m not sure if my approach is common. There are many pages of Photoshop User magazine dedicated to Lightroom which leads me to believe that many Photoshop Users are using Lightroom too. I suppose it might make sense to create a version of Photoshop that rolls all of Lightroom’s features into it but the truth is the main missing feature seems to be the image organization and image sharing (setting aside that Lightroom makes editing RAW images easier than Photoshop - the RAW edit features are in Photoshop).

For now I’ll be using both Lightroom and Photoshop in my workflow but I’m open to something different or new if it’s better and easier.

Bravo Angela - PhotoshopIsland Products Are Versatile

on May 04, 2011

I recently created a small surprise for my wife. I gave this to her the day she started a new job. I call it Bravo Angela. She was called the “New Sheriff” by her employer so I thought I’d have a little fun with it.

I found a great Sheriff badge on Amazon.com. Next I needed a design and holder for the badge. With just a little editing and size adjustment of the The Bracket Packet western-themed poster template I was ready to go. The entire project took less than 30 minuets. It did help that I had some French Paper Speckletone cream 80 lb cover paper to print on. Check out the results below.

Free Glass Buttons - Layered PSD

on April 25, 2011

I was recently signing up for a GoToMeeting account and noticed some beautiful buttons on their site. These buttons beg to be clicked and remind me of a perfect piece of hard candy (or am I just always hungry).

This type of button is very popular so I thought I would record a tutorial showing how I would make this button (in Photoshop there’s always more than one way to skin a cat) and offer the resulting layered Photoshop file as a freebie. The tutorial will help you make your own version of these buttons. Or you can just use them as is. Please enjoy and I’m sorry if it makes you hungry for hard candy.

Get the Free Glass Buttons Layered PSD here!

NOTE: Tested with Photoshop Elements 9.

Free Font - Designer Notes

on April 06, 2011

Although this is not brand new, it is the first time that it's been made available here on PhotoshopIsland. Designer Notes was a personal project that had been on my to-do list for a long time. I wanted a font that matched the appearance of notes in my sketchbook. I like to do sketches and take notes using a Pilot Precise V5RT pen. There's something special about how it puts ink on paper.

I hope you have as much fun using this font as I had making it. If you have questions about commercial usage please drop me an email.

Canon Digital SLR Repair & Upgrade Unbox

on March 16, 2011

Although I've owned several Canon cameras over several years I just recently needed to send one in for repair. My 5D Mark II began showing an error message to the point where it became impossible to use. So I found the Canon repair options on the canon website (not exactly an easy task) . I placed my repair order and shipped my 5D (I love this camera so it was hard to do but she was sick and had to go - this is the camera I used to shoot all the 50 Grunge Metal & Rust Textures High Resolution Images). I sent the repair to Canon's California location so my experience was with them. There are three location options in the U.S. that you choose from when completing the online repair form.

I received email confirmation that Canon received my 5D. At this point I got to wondering if, while they had my camera, if they could add the new mode lock upgrade. So I gave them a call. They were super nice and added the mode lock upgrade to my repair order (for a fee of course). A few days later my repaired and upgraded camera returned home.

The video below is the unbox of my returned 5D Mark II from Canon. I thought this would be of interest to anyone who might be considering the mode lock upgrade or sending their camera to Canon for repair.
